DEEP WINTER MOON OF BONE

910F6D74-2F81-456D-A384-6F6263C49294

Snow moon on wintry set
Banks aflood wide and wet

A boldly moon swollen so
From seed to see it grow

Cold moon and hung so low
Such slow and silent show

Moon of mood, moon of mud
Moon of bone and early buds
Marrow thick with lunar blood

Flowing like a winter stream
Glowing loud with winter dreams

FLOWEVER

7CC7EC3E-BEF9-4C01-9CC8-9548FDAE03AEThe world wants to make of you
many things

but first and foremost a Chaser.

When you of all people grasp
what a terrible job that is

Once you start running
you’ll never stop

Because what SEEMS so noisy
and clamored in you
can never be satisfied

and it’s not what that third gut
in you really needs anyway

You’re likelier to find a position
with better benefits
in that inimitable river which flows forever through you

or right under the rock
which sits in you

Be with it and preserve the silence

Don’t say the magic word—
It might just say Itself through you

if you become an empty vessel.

Then you can always put your stamp
on the bottom
that says that it’s yours

And no one needs to be the wiser.

AND BACK IN AGAIN

4904FBAB-58B5-4D58-9002-33888EEBBA51Why oh why is the seed of truth
so difficult to sow

when truth be told
I want to sleep, I want to not live
in some big love dream

but close my ears and fall
like hail in this storm

down on the weak, the past,
the false notes, the hollow bones of me

Yet even now I sing off key

Because I’ve heard (and not merely heard)

I’ve walked (and not merely walked)

I’ve lived in that country
where there is no guarantee
but the great river’s flow—
in those wild green moments
I live like a king

Still, why should I trust you,
big dream heart?

whispering calm assurances
when you just might be
my ancient superstition

you must know my need to rage
and rampage
across the landscape

I want my undammed energies
to crash upon the four kingdoms
of myself

to cast into stone
all unworthies
then break them to pieces
for not being…what?

Everything is what it is

and my guttural utterances
are silver-lipped thunder
striking terrible certainties
upon the world

But you, my mystery,
amidst all that,
you merely open
your dumb, soft hands

more silent than midnight

and I, that I that keeps slipping

keeps slipping into them,
and out of them

and back in again…

THE UNLEASHING

1F7714A2-F580-438B-BD3D-DF69E8933D94Clearly, the unhitching has hatched.

The difference between
the sneaky shadow
and liberation
is sheer

how nautical twilight nibbles up
the inky caress

how night swallows whole
the darkest of basement desires

how the undamnable brightness returns
as relentless salvation

Unveiling two kinds of blindness—one of unknowing
and one of knowing all too well
once the noise subsides

The clouds look pretty grand
all glistened and forged
from unlikely urges

First split, then cumulate
their bescattered impulses
to bring embolden bolts
to bear upon the land

So let’s take the cue
for mind has no purchase
on flow

The stone and water
lend a welcoming nod
and only ones standing stunned
are the ones
slipping beyond their self-embrace

Soon, we’ll no longer consider
the conventional chords

and the extravagant unleashing
will sound a chorus
as much doom as deliverance
chanting our name

However many syllables, however the accent,
it is pronounced: Destiny

and we strike, we reach
into the earth
and pull it out

like the final act
in the play
we didn’t know we wrote.

Beware the unleashing.

WHAT DO YOU HEAR WHEN YOU LISTEN TO LICHEN GROW?

D6A52611-6978-4212-A7D8-C76EC3CB7930In a mountain cave
under the spell
of a turbulent creek
I listen to lichen grow

Under the smell
of a winter rain
I listen to a landscape’s
green resurrection

Enchanted, I become velvety
like moss

I become patient like stone

I become beflowed like water

and suddenly remember
that I am
a songbird
a spiderweb
a sprouting buckeye

and wild like worms
in the hill beside me
escaping the flood

What do you hear when you listen to lichen grow?

I DISPUTE THE PASSAGE NO MORE

06E387DC-FB29-4805-8DF6-E1954A6BD199Out of the twelfth-month
midnightic pull, a murmur

sings itself vigorously
with all the force gravity
and the old unspeakable yearn
can muster

towards the rocks
and the source sea
a destiny pointed and unpent

How I with flow feel
both the heavy and light of love
robust and whole

I am really here
swallowing all unstoppable creeks
a mere bubble and not
a mere bubble

I hang my head low as the winter sun
and bold blending with cold waters
sweeping the sweet pang of fate
to which I am subscribed

Dipping ears wet I dispute
the passage no more

It hums me through the deep night
with the whisper
that all things in time
eventually
find their flow
